SKILLS USA WELD CONTEST RESULTS & WRAP-UP

The 2006 SkillsUSA (formerly VICA) skills contest was held this past week (Thursday, April 13, 2006) at the Phoenix Convention Center.  The weld contest, just one of the many skills competitions held on that same day, is able to accommodate 80 welding students from across the state of Arizona.  On Thursday, 49 High School (secondary) competitors and 19 Jr. College level (Post-secondary) competitors (68 competitors total) assembled for the welding competition.  Twelve competitors were no-shows for the contest.

Fourteen schools from across Arizona were represented at the weld contest this year as follows:  Antelope Union High School, Arizona Western College, Benson High School, Buckeye Union High School, Cochise College, EVIT, Flagstaff High School, Kofa High School, Lake Havasu High School, Mingus Union high School, Mountain View High School, NAVIT, Page High School, Valley High School.

Three medals (Gold, Silver, and Bronze) were awarded in both the secondary and post-secondary categories for welding.  The 2006 Arizona SkillsUSA winners are as follows:

The two Gold medal winners (above) are invited to travel to Kansas City (June 19, 2006) and represent the state of Arizona against the other 49 states in the National SkillsUSA weld contest.  Just a note:  Jason Trepanier, Post-secondary Gold Medal winner this year, was the Secondary Gold Medal winner last year and competed in the 2005 national weld contest.

The cost for electrical hookup and utility charge for the weld contest alone in 2006 (at the Phoenix Convention Center) was over $8,000.00.  The welding technical committee raised over $3000.00 from a last minute raffle to help offset the costs associated with the weld contest.  This year, a Miller Wire feed welding machine, a Lincoln wire feed welding machine, a Miller auto-darkening weld helmet, and various snap on tools and shirts were raffled off and the winners announced at the awards presentation Thursday night.  The raffle was well received and will continue next year with similar prizes.

Thanks again to the Phoenix corporations that make the weld contest successful:  Phoenix Welding Supply, Miller Electric, Lincoln Electric, SRP, APS, Honeywell ES&S, SouthWest Gas, Arizona Republic, ASU, Smith Equipment, Sowesco, and American Welding Society.
